PowerPath Troubleshooting Procedures
EMC’s PowerPath is host-based software that works in conjunction with Symmetrix. PowerPath enhances Symmetrix capabilities by providing automatic detection of and recovery from host-toSymmetrix connection failures. PowerPath enhances I/O performance by load balancing I/O requests across multiple I/O channels.
PowerPath is a thin (efficient) software layer that takes advantage of Symmetrix’s multipathing capabilities. It gives a host system the ability to manage multiple paths to a single device. After PowerPath is installed and configured, usage of PowerPath is no different than usage of a standard disk device. From that point forward PowerPath is constantly in use unless consciousefforts are made to disable it.
1. Become root on the host experiencing the problem.
2. Execute the command: /opt/EMCpower/bin/powermt display
# /opt/EMCpower/bin/powermt display total emcpower devices: 38, highest device number: 37 ============================================================================== ———— Adapters ———— —– Device Paths —— — Queued — ## Switch Name Summary Total Closed IOs Blocks ============================================================================== 0 Enabled sbus@2/QLGC,isp@2 Optimal 38 0 0 0
1 Enabled sbus@3/QLGC,isp@0 Optimal 38 0 0 0
2 Enabled sbus@7/QLGC,isp@0 Optimal 38 0 0 0
3 Enabled sbus@6/QLGC,isp@2 Degraded 38 0 0 0
3. Examine the output in /var/adm/messages
4. Execute: /opt/EMCpower/bin/powermt restore
5. Check the status of the channels & drives (/opt/EMCpower/bin/powermt display)
# /opt/EMCpower/bin/powermt display total emcpower devices: 38, highest device number: 37 ============================================================================== ———— Adapters ———— —– Device Paths —— — Queued — ## Switch Name Summary Total Closed IOs Blocks ==============================================================================
0 Enabled sbus@2/QLGC,isp@2 Optimal 38 0 0 0
1 Enabled sbus@3/QLGC,isp@0 Optimal 38 0 0 0
2 Enabled sbus@7/QLGC,isp@0 Optimal 38 0 0 0
3 Enabled sbus@6/QLGC,isp@2 Optimal 38 0 0 0
6. If the status has not returned to “Optimal” then escalate the problem.
