What makes the gmail spam filter so effective?

(Sorry if that sounded like a fake “frequently asked question” from the gmail marketing department
But… gmail seems to be effective and reliable in its filtering of spam, moreso than some other email tools I’ve tried, which often require extensive periods of “training the filter”). So what’s gmails secret?
